Don’t Grab That Ice Cream, Eat This Instead!

We all want something cold and refreshing to eat on a hot day, especially after a lesson or long day riding under the blazing sun. But don’t grab that sugary filled frozen treat! I’ve got something that tastes just as good as that ice cream bar, but is healthy and guilt free!

I recommend making a batch of these and putting them in the freezer at your barn. They are super to grab for a mid-day cool down snack.  Just be careful, they are so nummy you might come back to find them all gone!

Benefits of Bananas

Food Matters did a great article on “25 Powerful Reasons to Eat Bananas” and here are a few that are of particular interest to us equestrians.

  • Eat two bananas before a strenuous workout to pack an energy punch and sustain your blood sugar.
  • Protect against muscle cramps during workouts by eating a banana.
  • Eating a banana can lower the body temperature and cool you on a hot day.

Frozen Banana Recipe

Ingredients

2 large bananas cut in half or 4 small bananas

4 Popsicle sticks or similar

2-3 T creamy peanut butter

1-2 T Nutella (hazelnut cocoa spread)

Preparation

Peel bananas and place Popsicle stick about halfway into the center of the banana.

Combine peanut butter and Nutella in a small bowl.

Spread PB/Nutella combination with a butter knife like you’re “painting” the banana.

Once coated, roll in crushed walnuts, almonds or granola.

Place on a wax paper lined baking sheet and put in the freezer for a minimum of three hours.

Enjoy!
